Not all hyaluronic acid is the same. Here's what the difference actually means for your skin.


Hyaluronic acid has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare. It appears on product labels everywhere — from budget cleansers to premium serums — and is routinely described as a hydration miracle. Most of that reputation is deserved. But there's a distinction that rarely gets explained, and it's the one that separates a product that genuinely works from one that only works on the surface.

That distinction is molecular weight.


What Hyaluronic Acid Actually Is

Hyaluronic acid is not an acid in the way most people understand the word. It doesn't exfoliate or strip the skin. It's a naturally occurring molecule — a glycosaminoglycan, if you want the technical term — found throughout the human body, with the highest concentrations in skin, joints, and connective tissue.

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid remains on the skin's surface. It forms a breathable moisture barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss (the rate at which water evaporates from skin), and gives that immediate smoothness and plumpness you feel after application.

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid — hydrolysed hyaluronic acid — has been broken down into smaller fragments that can penetrate into the deeper layers of the epidermis. Here it hydrates from within, supporting the skin's own moisture retention mechanisms and delivering longer-lasting results than surface hydration alone can provide.

Sodium hyaluronate sits between the two — a salt form of hyaluronic acid that is more stable, penetrates slightly better than high molecular weight versions, and is less prone to breaking down on contact with air. It's the form most commonly used in well-formulated moisturisers.

Used together, these different molecular weights work at multiple depths simultaneously. The surface is hydrated and protected. The deeper layers are replenished. The result is more comprehensive and longer-lasting than any single molecular weight could achieve alone.

Men's skin is structurally different from women's skin in ways that make hydration both more important and more easily neglected.

The presence of multiple forms indicates a multi-molecular weight formula. A single listing — usually just Sodium Hyaluronate — indicates a single molecular weight, which is fine, but limited.

Also consider what the hyaluronic acid is formulated alongside. It performs better in the presence of humectants like glycerin and betaine, which draw additional moisture to the skin and support hyaluronic acid's water-binding function. Look for these in the supporting cast.
